Foggy Glass in a Sliding Door: What the Moisture Means

By Dave Silver

Moisture trapped between panes of sliding door glass.

Moisture on the room-facing surface and moisture trapped between panes are different problems. Surface condensation can reflect indoor humidity and glass temperature. A persistent cloudy film or droplets sealed between panes usually indicate that the insulated glass unit is no longer sealed as designed.

Cleaning cannot reach that space. The practical repair is normally replacement of the glass unit or panel, depending on construction, availability, safety requirements, and frame condition. Measurements must account for thickness, spacer, coating, tempering, and how the glass is retained.

Fogging is not necessarily the same as a water leak at the threshold. We inspect glazing, seals, frame drainage, and surrounding weatherstripping separately so one symptom is not used to justify unrelated work.

Can a hole be drilled to remove the fog?
That may alter appearance temporarily but does not restore the original insulated seal or performance.
